Introduction

Thank you for using WeChat Article Reading Assistant (the “Extension”). We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about our data practices. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle your information when you use our Extension.

Our Privacy Commitment

We do NOT collect, transmit, or store any personal information or browsing data on external servers.

All data processing happens locally within your browser. Your reading habits, highlights, notes, and preferences remain entirely on your device under your control.

Information We Store Locally

The Extension stores the following data locally in your browser only using Chrome’s storage APIs and IndexedDB:

1. User Preferences

  • What: Language preference for AI summaries (Chinese/English/Japanese), feature toggles, UI settings, custom domain whitelist
  • Where: Chrome local storage (chrome.storage.local)
  • Purpose: Personalize your reading experience according to your preferences
  • Control: You can clear this data anytime through Chrome’s extension settings

2. Reading Highlights and Notes

  • What: Text selections you highlight, colors used, notes you add, timestamps
  • Where: Local IndexedDB database in your browser
  • Purpose: Save your annotations for future reference when you revisit articles
  • Control: You can delete individual highlights/notes through the extension interface or clear all data by uninstalling the extension

3. AI Summary Cache

  • What: AI-generated article summaries (text only)
  • Where: Local IndexedDB with automatic expiration
  • Purpose: Improve performance and reduce redundant API calls when revisiting articles
  • Retention: Cached summaries expire automatically after a set period

4. Session State

  • What: Current tab URL, domain whitelist status
  • Where: Chrome session storage (chrome.storage.session)
  • Purpose: Synchronize sidebar panel with current article page
  • Retention: Cleared automatically when browser session ends

Permissions We Use

scripting

  • Purpose: Inject reading assistance features (TOC, highlights, progress tracker) into article pages
  • Scope: Only activated on article pages you visit
  • Data Access: Reads article content to extract text for summarization and generate table of contents. No data is transmitted externally.

tabs

  • Purpose: Detect when you switch tabs or update pages to provide context-aware features
  • Data Access: Reads current tab URL to check domain whitelist. No browsing history is collected.

storage

  • Purpose: Save your preferences, highlights, and notes locally
  • Data Access: All stored data remains in your browser and is never transmitted to external servers

sidePanel

  • Purpose: Display reading assistant panel in Chrome’s sidebar
  • Data Access: Only displays data already stored locally in your browser

Host Permissions (http:/// and https:///)

  • Purpose: Enable reading features across various article platforms (WeChat, Medium, Zhihu, personal blogs, etc.)
  • Data Access: Only processes content on pages you actively visit. No background data collection occurs.

Chrome AI API Usage

The Extension uses Chrome’s built-in AI Summarization API to generate article summaries:

  • Processing: All AI processing happens locally in your browser using Chrome’s built-in AI capabilities
  • No External Servers: Article content is NOT sent to any external AI service or our servers
  • Trial Tokens: We use Chrome’s Origin Trial tokens to access experimental AI features. These tokens only identify our extension to Chrome, not individual users.

Data We Do NOT Collect

✅ We do NOT collect:

  • Browsing history or URLs you visit
  • Personal identifiable information (name, email, address, etc.)
  • User behavior analytics or tracking data
  • IP addresses or device identifiers
  • Cookies for tracking purposes
  • Any data from pages you visit beyond what’s necessary for reading enhancement

✅ We do NOT:

  • Transmit any data to external servers
  • Share data with third parties
  • Use data for advertising or marketing
  • Sell or monetize user data in any form
  • Track you across websites

Data Security

  • Local Storage Only: All data remains in your browser’s secure storage
  • No Network Transmission: The Extension does not communicate with external servers (except Chrome’s built-in AI API, which operates locally)
  • User Control: You have full control to delete all stored data by uninstalling the extension or clearing browser data

Third-Party Services

This Extension does NOT use any third-party services, analytics tools, or external APIs (except Chrome’s built-in features).

Children’s Privacy

This Extension does not knowingly collect any information from children under 13 years of age. The Extension is designed for general article reading and does not target children.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify users of any material changes by updating the “Last Updated” date at the top of this policy. Continued use of the Extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.

Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access all data stored by the Extension (through the extension interface)
  • Delete your data at any time (by removing highlights/notes or uninstalling)
  • Opt-out of features (by disabling them in settings)
  • Request information about our data practices (contact us below)

我们使用的权限

scripting（脚本注入）

  • 目的：在文章页面注入阅读辅助功能（目录、高亮、进度追踪器）

  • 数据访问：读取文章内容以提取文本用于摘要和生成目录。不会向外部传输任何数据。

Chrome AI API 使用
